The newly installed AAS laboratory at SU: Gujarat was inaugurated by Shri A. Thiruvengadam, ADG and HOD, Western Region on 24-08-2016. The Thermo Fisher, Model: ICE 3500 AA equipment and peripherals was installed on the 2^nd floor of B Block. On the occasion the HOD congratulated the officers of Chemical Stream for setting up the facility which would help the Region to speed up the analyses of samples generated through NGCM project.

Shri A. Thiruvengadam also visited Balasinor Dinosaur Park in Rahioli , Kheda District and was was informed about the role of Geological Survey of India in discovering the fossil finds, preservation and geotourism related activities taken up by State Unit Gujarat.

The High end Research Laboratory “Seismo-Geodetic Data Receiving and Processing Centre” (SGDRPC) has been established at Dharitri Building, GSI, Salt Lake.

This Laboratory is a state of the art centre of research on seismology. It is a real time data receiving and processing Centre which receives data from remotely established five seismological observatories located at different places in India through VSAT link. The data collected from these observatories will help earthquake prediction research, which follows a three tier approach like study of rock deformation prior to earthquake, then rupture propagation and ultimately the post earthquake studies for identification of precursor events and application of such studies in future earthquake prediction.

British Geological Survey (BGS) as part of a multi-institutional international consortium is engaged in executing a societal project called LANDSLIP (initially known as MIRRORS) in South Asia. LANDSLIP stands for Landslide Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment, Preparedness and Early Warning in South Asia: Integrating Meteorology, Landscape and Society. LANDSLIP project has nine international collaborators – five from UK, three from India including GSI and one from Italy. The Principal and Co-Principal Investigators are Prof. (Dr.) Bruce D. Malamud, Kings College, London (KCL) and Dr. Helen J. Reeves, Science Director, BGS. Apart from BGS and KCL the identified Co-Investigators are Geological Survey of India (GSI), Amrita University, Kerala, and, Practical Action-India - an NGO from India....

India was the chief source of diamonds up to 18th century A.D. and produced many historically celebrated diamonds such as the Koh-i-Noor, the Great Mogul, the Pitt Regent, the Orloff, the Nizam, the Hope etc. The diamond industry, though perhaps dates back to 2nd / 3rd century B.C., flourished mostly during 13th –17th centuries A.D. with production of diamonds mainly from the mines located in the Krishna - Penner Valleys in modern Telangana & Andhra Pradesh states.

The alluvial diamond deposits along the Penner River, between Jammalamadugu and the Chennur-Kanuparthi-Kondapeta belt, have been known from ancient times; however no systematic studies were carried for placer diamonds in the modern era.
